Every year, on October 10, we celebrate World Mental Health Day. Established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health, it presents an opportunity within Mental Illness Awareness Month to raise awareness about mental health challenges, fight the stigma that prevents people from talking openly about mental health, and mobilize support for mental health services and legislation.
These are all important facets of the work we do every day at Spurwink to advocate for adults, children, and families in Maine experiencing behavioral health challenges. To learn more about our services, call (207) 871-1200, email info@spurwink.org, or fill out our contact form online.
2026 Theme: Lived Experiences Heard—Real Voices, Real Change
The 2026 World Mental Health Day theme emphasizes how important it is that we not only listen to the voices of people with lived experience of mental health conditions—but that we also include them in decision-making.
People who have lived experience of mental health conditions have a vital form of expertise. With their knowledge, we can make better informed decisions about policies, services, and programs that affect their lives.
Often, decisionmakers ask people with lived experiences to share their stories. But then they are left out of the actual decision-making process. This World Mental Health Day, we call on decisionmakers to build policies with these people, not just for them.
