May is Mental Health Awareness Month. First observed in the U.S. in 1949, this month is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about mental and behavioral health care, mental health concerns, and how to get mental health support. The theme for Mental Health Awareness Month in 2026 is “Have more good days, together.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing anxiety, depression, or another mental or behavioral health concern, know that you don’t have to suffer in silence. There are several ways to get help, as outlined below.

Mental Health Resources in Maine

  1. In life-threatening situations, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
  2. If you are suicidal or in emotional distress, consider using the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call or text 988 or start a chat online to connect with a trained crisis counselor. The Lifeline provides 24-hour confidential support to anyone who needs it. Access the veterans crisis line by pressing “1” after dialing 988.
  3. Call Maine’s Warmline. Maine’s 24/7 warmline—call (207) 772-9276—provides phone support from a trained peer specialist who has life experience with mental health recovery.
  4. If you’ve experienced domestic violence, call 1-800-799-SAFE (1-800-799-7233). The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides free, confidential support.
  5. Call the National maternal Health Hotline. Call 1-833-TLC-MAMA (833-852-6262) for free, 24/7 confidential help if you are a mother or pregnant.
  6. Visit your primary care provider for a mental health screening. Your PCP can refer you to mental health professionals, like social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists, so you can receive specialized care.
  7. Utilize federal resources. These include the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) helpline and online services locator, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) online tool for finding providers, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) online tool for finding VA locations and providers.
  8. Use Mental Health America’s free screening tools. These tools screen for a variety of common mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress, and ADHD.
  9. If you’re a college student, access mental health services through your school. Your university’s health center may have mental and behavioral health providers, like therapists and psychiatrists, peer support groups, and other resources.
  10. Use your health insurance app or database or contact a representative from your insurance company to find covered local mental and behavioral health providers.
