Spurwink announces that Johnny’s Selected Seeds’ Charitable Giving Committee has chosen to partner with and support its therapeutic gardening program at the Spurwink Day Treatment School in Chelsea.
Johnny’s Selected Seeds will be sending a donation of assorted, requested seeds to the Chelsea Organic Garden, where students identified with special needs will get involved in garden planning, preparation, seed ordering, planting, transplanting, harvesting and tracking yield. This Spurwink gardening program helps participating Chelsea Day Treatment School students to become more engaged learners by developing problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills. The Chelsea Organic Garden is one of Spurwink’s many specialized programs supporting the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, adults, and families. In the last two years, over 2,000 pounds of organic food have been harvested from the garden and distributed to Chelsea School students, to nine Spurwink residential houses that support adults with behavioral health challenges and developmental disabilities, and to the Augusta Food Bank.
Johnny’s Selected Seeds is a privately held, employee-owned seed producer and merchant headquartered in Winslow. Each year, Johnny’s contributes to educational, agricultural, and horticultural programs and events, as well as local community efforts.
