Lewiston City Council to vote for possibly the last time on needle exchange ordinance
The Lewiston City Council is set to vote once again Tuesday on an ordinance setting rules for needle exchange programs in the city, and after a lengthy process officials hope this vote will finish the ordinance.
“We’ve certainly been at this for many months now, and you know, sometimes that’s just how long it takes,” said Mayor Carl Sheline. “I’m hopeful we’ll be able to wrap it up this next Tuesday.”
The Tuesday vote will be the second reading on the ordinance, which means if it passes it will become official, and take effect 60 days after passage, Sheline said.
Needle exchange programs allow intravenous drug users to exchange dirty needles for clean ones. The idea, officials have said, is to prevent the spread of disease through re-use of dirty needles.
