Foster Care

FOSTER CARE

Spurwink offers an array of services to support foster families and children in foster care. Beginning with the exploration of becoming a foster family and continuing throughout the placement of children in the home, we provide information, guidance, education, and, with Treatment Foster Care, in home supportive services. Our comprehensive approach includes A Family for ME, recruiting resource families for foster/adoptive care statewide; the Resource Parent Care Team, providing quick access to information and referrals to foster families; Treatment Foster Care, partnering with families that foster children whose behavioral needs require ongoing, more intensive support; and the Adoption Matching Program, pairing licensed families with children awaiting adoption.

A FAMILY FOR ME

A Family for ME is a partnership between the Department of Health and Human Services and Spurwink Services, with a focus on raising awareness of the urgent need for foster families and finding Maine families who are willing and able to parent children in foster care.

Spurwink Treatment Foster Care partners with resource families every step of the way–assisting with the matching process, providing case management and advocacy for youth in care, and supporting and providing education to foster parents throughout the journey. Learn more about becoming a treatment foster home.

Additional resource homes are urgently needed to meet targeted recruitment of families who can provide temporary care to children who are in the process of reunification with their birth families; who can accommodate larger sibling groups to allow these siblings to remain connected in the same home; and who can provide care for older youth with challenging behaviors resulting from their exposure to traumatic events. Families are also needed for older children for whom reunification with their birth families is no longer an available option and for whom an adoptive family is being sought. ADOPTION MATCHING PROGRAM (AMP)

The Adoption Matching Program (AMP) works alongside DHHS to pair licensed families with children awaiting adoption. AMP utilizes both a data-driven software system demonstrated to improve outcomes of children in care as well as an intake process that recognizes each family’s unique composition, experiences, and needs.

Throughout the matching process, coordinators bring together adoptive parents, youth in care, caseworkers, and therapeutic providers in regular meetings to coordinate support services, understand trauma-related behaviors, and brainstorm parenting strategies to better meet the needs of children transitioning into permanency. Monthly virtual trainings and a facilitated support group are also offered by AMP, with the combined goals of building community and expanding trauma-informed parenting skills. Services are available to all licensed foster and adoptive families throughout the State of Maine who are approved by the Resource Unit Supervisors.
