On August 15, Spurwink President and CEO Eric Meyer attended the Maine premier of OUTSIDER at the Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro, and was honored with the opportunity to speak in a panel discussion after the film.
OUTSIDER tells the moving story of Maury Ornest, a gifted baseball player who experienced a psychotic break in his early 20s, leading to a lifelong battle with severe schizoaffective disorder. The film shows how it pulled his family apart and was very difficult for all those who loved him. After his death at age 58 from heart disease, his sister Laura discovered 1,400 original paintings along with thousands of pages of journals that served as a creative outlet for Maury. His art will be exhibited at the Waldo Theatre Gallery until August 29th.
During the post-film panel, the discussion covered topics such as mental health awareness, compassion, advocacy, and access to resources to assist individuals and families facing mental health challenges.
We thank The Waldo Theatre for inviting Spurwink to be a part of this premiere, and for generously sharing a portion of proceeds from the sale of Maury’s art to benefit Spurwink.
