Spurwink appreciates our funders for their generous support in helping us enrich the lives of those impacted by mental and behavioral health challenges. With their contributions, we are improving health outcomes and ensuring that people of all backgrounds can receive the care they need.
Mascoma Bank is helping us address some of the challenges faced by students with disabilities and mental health challenges. Spurwink’s Day Treatment Schools serve students like these from 15 counties, whose needs are too great for traditional public schools. While many face low self-esteem, limited social engagement, and poor wellness, our Special Olympics team breaks down these barriers by helping students build confidence, foster friendships, and live a healthy, active lifestyle.
Thanks to Mascoma Bank, we’re able to equip students with gear and uniforms for Special Olympics events, cover registration costs for regional and state competitions, and expand access so more students can experience the mental and physical health benefits of athletic achievement.
The impact of Mascoma Bank’s support can be seen in one student’s particular story, who joined Spurwink’s Special Olympics Track and Field team in 2019. At first, the intense physical activity presented an overwhelming challenge—but with support and encouragement, they committed to a routine of sprinting, running laps, lifting weighted balls, and doing squats, pushups, and planks. That same year, they competed in their first regional competition. Three years later, they took home two medals from the regional and state games! The student graduated from Spurwink’s Chelsea Day Treatment school in 2022, carrying confidence, self-esteem, and wellness forward into the rest of their life.
