BIDDEFORD, Maine —
Biddeford’s City Council approved a proposal Tuesday to hire two additional mental health professionals to aid the police department.
The action was passed unanimously following a formal request for police Chief Roger Beaupre.
Last October, the department approached local behavioral health agency Spurwink to hire community engagement specialist Jacob Hammer who will serve as a supervisor to the new hires.
The total estimated cost for the two new staff members is roughly $156,000 annually.
Benjamin Strick, director of adult behavioral health for Spurwink, says Hammer has had success supporting residents dealing with the range of challenges.
