Auburn considers adopting needle exchange program

Right now, there’s a moratorium in place on needle exchange services in Auburn.

On Monday, the city council heard from the director of the state’s infectious disease prevention program, who explained the different ways cities and towns are dealing with needle waste.

They also heard from Spurwink, the lone needle exchange provider in Lewiston, to find out how many people they’re currently helping.

“Serving about 500 people probably within the last three months, and that is a big number,” Spurwink Supervisor of Outreach Programs Ernestine Perreault said. “And that’s a lot of people that are listening to my staff and are coming and getting support.”
