Thanks to the generous support of donors and the dedication of over 15 volunteers, Spurwink recently hosted an unforgettable Prom Night for Spurwink students. With more than 30 students attending, many accompanied by friends and family, this year’s celebration was truly a community effort. Local businesses donated food and with the help of community investments, supplies and outfits were also provided, making the event both festive and inclusive. We strive to ensure that each kid can experience typical high school experiences despite their individual challenges. For example, we create low-sensory rooms for students who get overstimulated and need a break. We transform our “staff training room at our Portland Office” into a prom ballroom with a dance floor. Volunteers and staff even put together a visual menu for attendees to “order” their prom dinner.
Each prom has its own unique theme, from “Under the Sea,” to “Luau,” and this year’s “Winter Wonderland” stood out. One student from the Glickman program played a key role in developing this idea, complete with an appearance from Mr. And Mrs. Clause, thanks to two incredibly generous volunteers.
Parents were deeply moved by the night. One mother shared that she never imagined her daughter would get the chance to dress up and attend prom. For many, it was not just a dance but a rare and meaningful milestone. The prom also sparked new connections between staff, students, and peers, creating lasting memories and strengthening professional relationships.
In the words of Medical Director Children’s Services, Kim Foster, “These moments are not possible without the support of donors. Planning events…requires a great deal of effort as there are many facets most wouldn’t think of.”
