Spurwink responds to community needs by meeting people where they are—providing behavioral health care, substance use disorder treatment, and support across a wide range of challenges for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. What started with one Portland house in 1960 has grown into a statewide organization with nearly 1,000 employees, serving over 10,200 children, adults, and families in homes, schools, and communities across Maine.
I recently interviewed Becky Winslow, Maine Community Bank’s Director of Community Relations & Foundation. She told me something that stuck: “Advancing prosperity isn’t just about money, it’s about people being okay.”
For Maine Community Bank, partnering with Spurwink was a no-brainer. “Our mission is to advance prosperity for our communities,” Becky explained. “But that means looking well beyond traditional banking. It’s about overall well-being.”
The Connection No One Talks About Enough
Becky didn’t hesitate when I asked why mental health matters to a bank. “We see it,” she said plainly. “These challenges touch individuals, sure, but they also ripple out—to families, workplaces, whole neighborhoods. They affect housing stability, whether someone can keep a job, or their financial health. It’s all connected.”
That’s the reality Spurwink deals with every day. And, according to Becky, we respond with something you can’t quantify on a spreadsheet: heart. “When I think of Spurwink, I immediately think of compassion and care,” she told me. “They help people build stability. And stable people build strong communities. That’s what we believe, too”.
More Than a Donation: A Partnership
Maine Community Bank is part of Spurwink’s corporate partnership program, and Becky is excited about what’s next. “We’re looking forward to Spurwink’s continued success—their expertise, the way they meet people where they are,” she said. “Investing in recovery and resilience programs…that’s how we help create healthier communities for everyone. Not just some people. Everyone.”
While a bank and a behavioral health provider might seem like an unlikely pair, when the goal is providing compassionate care and uplifting our community, it makes perfect sense.
Spurwink is grateful for partners like Maine Community Bank who are committed to our community and go the distance.
