Dear Friends,

Over the last six months, a New York Times health reporter, Jan Hoffman, has been visiting Spurwink and Portland, and working on a series of articles about the surge of methamphetamine use in Maine, and Portland in particular.

The first three articles were released this week and are very well done, rely on well-established research, and are written with compassion. While the content of the articles can be difficult to read, it is important to share these truths. Spurwink is deeply committed to providing services, and in turn, hope, to individuals struggling with substance use disorder and mental health challenges.

A future article will focus on Spurwink’s pilot treatment program in contingency management, which shows great promise and was launched with support from the Maine Health Access Foundation. We will share that next article when it’s published.

I am so proud of our Spurwink Adult Behavioral Health teams and the important work they do with some of our most vulnerable neighbors. As a friend of Spurwink, thank you for partnering with us in this work.

-Eric Meyer, President and CEO, Spurwink
