Meet Tina Currie, an enthusiastic volunteer on Spurwink’s Humanitarian Committee. Tina, who joined Spurwink’s IT team after Tri-County Mental Health Services (TCMHS) joined Spurwink last year, quickly became involved with volunteering by joining the 2025 Humanitarian Planning Committee, and helped immensely with this year’s event.

We caught up with Tina to get her perspective on volunteering for Spurwink and were able to ask a few questions.

What kind of volunteer work do you do for Spurwink?

I volunteer on the Humanitarian Committee, mainly on the logistics piece of the event. I’m working on decorations and write-ups for past Humanitarians to honor during this year’s event. I prefer helping more behind the scenes, but whatever the team needs, I’m here to help!

What inspired you to get involved with volunteering?

As a member of Spurwink’s IT department, I like to feel involved with the agency and have opportunities to get to know people in other departments. I believe in building relationships with people. Spurwink’s mission also deeply resonates with me, and I am passionate about the success of the agency and what it means for the community.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a volunteer with Spurwink?

For now, my most rewarding experience is truly feeling like I am being of assistance. I like to be in service to people and I always want to help. At Tri-County, I felt so proud of our last gala. We raised money, had a great band, ate great food, and the dance floor was packed. It was a great night, and I am excited to have the chance to do it again.

What do you think makes Spurwink’s mission and work so important?

I believe mental health services are critical. Supporting people with those kinds of needs helps the community by supporting healthier people in society. Spurwink’s work is such a huge piece of helping the people that we interact with in our communities. Breaking the stigma around mental health is also very important.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering at Spurwink?

I would say don’t hesitate to try it! If you feel like volunteering at Spurwink is a good fit for you, we’d be happy for you to join the team. We always need more hands and it’s a fun and fulfilling opportunity.

What is your favorite quality about yourself?

I think I am a very friendly person, and I always try to be helpful and of service.

What’s your go-to comfort meal?

Definitely mac and cheese.

Go-to karaoke song?

It has to be Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.
