Get to know Erin McAllister, who has been a Spurwink volunteer for about three years. She was introduced to Spurwink from a friend, who serves on the Spurwink Board of Directors and Spurwink’s Development Committee, Carrie Cianchette. Erin was a huge help in planning this year’s Humanitarian Awards and decorating for Spurwink’s Prom. Check out this Portland Press Herald article and our photo album to see Erin’s work in action!
When I’m not working or volunteering at Spurwink, I’m: I work part-time for a marketing agency; I’m an active board member of the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust; and my husband and I are raising three teenage sons! My hobbies change with the seasons and this summer I look forward to traveling, hiking, biking, reading, knitting, gardening, and eating my weight’s worth of s’mores.
What made this year’s Humanitarian event stand out: This year’s event was infused with some really fun elements like DJ Jon. It felt so good to dance after listening to a program that really tugged at the heartstrings.
My favorite part of the Humanitarian event: Every year my best memory from this event is the honoree’s speech. Every one of the honorees and their speeches are so inspiring.
What made volunteering at Prom a special experience: I love decorating for a party and when I heard there was a need to help put on a prom for Spurwink students, I raised my hand. What I find special is knowing how much the kids look forward to this event and how dedicated the staff is to providing a classic teen experience they might not have otherwise. s.
Spurwink programs I connect with most deeply: My mama heart melts learning about each one of them. From educating kids with autism, to housing adults with intellectual disabilities, to providing services to new Mainers, and supporting folks with substance use disorders.
Why does behavioral health matter to me? I believe mental health is an important aspect to achieving whole-body health. We are complex beings, living in a challenging world, and under a wide range of circumstances. We can all benefit from compassionate care and services that help us be our best selves; I am so grateful there are providers like Spurwink making a difference in the lives of my fellow Mainers.
Favorite way to de-stress: Knitting, walking while listening to an entertaining podcast, and chatting + laughing with friends.
Words to live by: “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” – Julia Child
Most interesting thing I’ve read or watched recently: I’m currently enjoying The Covenant of Water, by Abraham Verghese.
The music I jam to alone in the car is: The Bahamas, Caamp, or Brandi Carlile.
Favorite ice cream: Chocolate with peanut butter swirl.
Sweet or salty? Both!
Mountains or beach? I head to the mountains more than the beach but I love both. The hike up Morse Mountain to Popham Beach has the best of both worlds.
