Donate to Spurwink Services today to help make a difference if Mainers’ Lives.
Some clients have histories of traumatic experiences; others face an invisible challenge such as depression or anxiety; and many cannot live at home due to the severity of their disabilities. The generosity of our donors helps provide our clients with individualized treatment and a clear path forward.
A contribution provides individual treatment for children like Luke.
LUKE’S STORY
Luke requires 1:1 education support, and struggles with anxiety. Luke also was born with a heart defect, and in the spring of Luke’s first grade year, he was scheduled for heart surgery.
The out-of-school recovery time worried his family and teacher, who were afraid that this much time out of school could be a huge setback for him. Alyssa, the Spurwink clinician placed in Luke’s public school, stepped in to help Luke, his family, and his classroom prepare for the surgery and his absence.
Under her clinical oversight:
- Luke wrote a book for the class about his heart and how it was going to be fixed;
- The class made a piece of art they called “Flat Luke” that was left in his seat during his absence; and
- His classroom even held a mini version of the “Jump Rope for Heart” activity in honor and support of Luke.
Each of these efforts helped with a successful transition and, after six weeks, the real Luke returned to take his seat in his classroom. When he returned, his classmates officially recognized him as a “heart warrior.” Thanks to Alyssa’s guidance, and the financial support that made it possible, Luke’s social, educational, and mental health treatment—like his heart—didn’t miss a beat.
Luke’s mom told us that this type of creative, therapeutic support is something that would not have been possible without Alyssa and Spurwink’s Public School Counseling Program.
