Spurwink staff recognized by Children’s Advocacy Center
Two of Spurwink’s amazing staff were recently recognized by the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Androscoggin, Franklin, & Oxford (AFO) Counties at its regional Multidisciplinary Team Training. Dr. Amanda Brownell, Medical Director for the Spurwink Center for Safe and Healthy Families, received the Community Commitment Award, and Abbey O’Connor, Regional Director of Outpatient and Community Services, Western Region, received the Rapid Response Award. Their work goes above and beyond the day to day collaborative efforts and and the CAC AFO team is proud and honored to work alongside these two talented professionals.
GRANTS IN ACTION

Expanding Seed to Plate program
With support from the Big Lots Foundation, Spurwink is expanding its Seed to Plate Program, introducing youth with behavioral health challenges and development disabilities to gardening and eating fresh, local, unprocessed foods. The Day Treatment and Residential Programs in Lewiston will use the funds to build a new greenhouse, allowing them to grow tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers, from seed.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

USI volunteers at Glickman Academy
We would like to shine a light on a dedicated group of volunteers from USI who spent a day in August getting Glickman Academy ready for the school year. From painting classrooms to sorting science lab materials, they got our classrooms into tip top shape. The teachers were overjoyed at the work these volunteers accomplished. We are grateful for USI’s continued dedication and support as a Corporate Partner.

Commentary: Don’t overlook nonprofits’ role in the Maine economy
By Jennifer Hutchins
"When talking about a strong Maine economy, industries like marine resources, tourism and biotech justifiably top the list. Yet the pursuit of a prosperous Maine requires deeper understanding of how communities thrive, including the wide variety of roles nonprofits play in sustaining and enriching community health and vibrancy. Nonprofits support Maine’s future by focusing on early care and education and connecting youth with service and work opportunities."
