Hiring Event! Open to Current Employees & the Public
Join Spurwink at their administrative office in Portland for an open-air hiring event on Tuesday, July 11th from 10 am to 2 pm! This event is open to the public, and we welcome current Spurwink employees to see what openings and opportunities are available.



 
World Refugee Day & Juneteenth
World Refugee Day, which is observed on June 20th each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the of the refugee crisis across the globe. Emelda Wani adds, "As a refugee woman who migrated to this country, I am honored to find a workplace (Spurwink) that continuously strives to help those that are underserved and marginalized population affected by inequality everyday..."

 


Largest Team Yet Participates in Special Olympics
Twenty-six Spurwink athletes from across our day treatment programs participated in Special Olympics Track and Field Regional Games this year, our largest team yet! Of those, 14 athletes traveled to Orono to compete in the State Games. Over 65 athletes, staff, and family members represented Spurwink at the regional games.




Spurwink Helps with Maine's Yellow Flag Law
Did you know Spurwink helps in the evaluations of Maine's yellow flag law? "Public safety leaders say the new uptick in yellow flag orders in Maine is thanks to a telehealth contract with Spurwink...which has helped streamline how quickly law enforcement officers can check that medical opinion box."


 

Spurwink Advocacy Update
Spurwink has had a strong presence in Augusta during the 131st Maine Legislative Session, advocating for issues that are important to our clients, staff and programs. We were well represented by our membership in the Alliance for Addiction and Mental Health Services, the Behavioral Health Community Collaborative (BHCC), and Maine Association of Community Services Providers (MACSP).

Spurwink Joins in June Pride Celebrations
June is Pride Month, we're proud to share that Spurwink actively supported and participated in celebrations. Spurwink staff, friends, and family marched proudly in the Portland Pride Parade and Festival. This is a time to honor and uplift our LGBTQIA+ community, celebrating their diversity, resilience, and valuable contributions to the community.
 

Night-a-Glow for Students at Spurwink's Prom
Each June, dedicated Spurwink staff put together a prom for our students who attend one of our three special education schools. We strive to ensure that each teenager can experience typical high school experiences despite their induvial challenges. This year’s prom theme was Glow!

Dan Bonner, Spurwink COO, Retires after 42 Years
After more than 42 years with Spurwink, Dan Bonner is winding down his career, and in his words, “leaving a job and an organization he loves, and believes in.” Dan joined Spurwink in 1981 as a direct care worker and has spent his entire professional career with the agency. We wish him the very best in this next chapter of life.
