DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Donor Spotlight: Sophie Cyr
Sophie was inspired after learning about the challenges many children around the world face that prevent them from obtaining basic education. One of those obstacles is lack of school supplies which lead her to donate arts and craft supplies, games, book, and school supplies to Spurwink. Sophie was drawn to the work our ShifaME program does with refugee children and feels that every child whether they are poor or rich, should have equal access and opportunities to a quality education because it will ultimately help break the cycle of poverty and help inspire the next generation. Thank you Sophie for supporting your community right here in Maine!

Summer Tips for Children with ASD
Although we're almost through the month of July, beautiful summer days are still ahead of us in Maine. For some children with special needs, particularly some children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), time away from the structure and routine of the school day (or homeschool day) can be dysregulating. We've put together a list of tips as we roll through summer.

Biddeford council approves more mental health workers for police department
The city will now expand a contract with Spurwink to add 2 community engagement specialists to help with mental health calls.
"Like police in other southern Maine cities, Biddeford’s officers have been responding to more calls from people in crisis or struggling with their mental health. Police departments, including Biddeford, have responded by hiring mental health workers better equipped to help people during and after crises."
