Shared Living: Meet Clarissa & Matthew
Meet Clarissa and Matthew. Clarissa is a Shared Living Provider to her brother, Matthew, who is an adult living with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). When she first heard of the Shared Living program, she said, “It made so much sense. I had become by brother’s current caregiver after our father passed away, about three years prior to learning about the program.”

This is Demitri's Story
Demitri joined Spurwink’s Special Olympics Track and Field team in 2019. At that time, the intense physical activity required for participation was a challenge for Demitri and a barrier to his overall well-being. However, encouraged by support from staff, coaches, and fellow athletes, Demitri persisted through new and challenging workouts, and got his first taste of athletic success. This story was originally told in a four-part series through social media. Visit our website for the story in its entirety and for links to the individual posts.

National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month
January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which provides an opportunity to shine a light on this prevalent problem and the response that the Cumberland County Children's Advocacy Center (CCCAC) at Spurwink is providing for youth that experience this form of victimization.
GRANTS IN ACTION

Ashlea's Place to help people struggling with long-term homelessness
The Portland City Council voted to fully fund Spurwink's ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) proposal for Ashlea’s Place, an ultra-low barrier housing first mental health recovery residence for people struggling with long-term homelessness. This project will be a collaboration between Spurwink, Community Housing of Maine (CHOM), and Milestone and will help vulnerable unhoused community members.
