2006 Spurwink Humanitarian of the Year
More than $350,000 Raised At Awards Dinner To Help Spurwink Meet the Mental Health Needs of Maine Citizens
Maine business and community leader William J. Ryan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TD Banknorth Inc., was named the Humanitarian of the Year by Spurwink at a gala event held on Saturday, November 4th in South Portland . The annual awards dinner, also a major fundraiser for Spurwink, raised more than $350,000. Given annually since 1987, the Humanitarian of the Year Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to enrich the lives of others.
"Bill Ryan is an exceptional humanitarian and leader," said Spurwink President Peter McPherson . "He has given tirelessly of his time, talent and resources to make Maine a better place for so many people. Bill is the 20 th recipient of this annual award, and we are thrilled to bestow this well-deserved honor upon him."
"Spurwink is also pleased to announce that the awards event raised more than $350,000, which will enable us to continue to help meet the mental healthcare needs of Maine citizens. Our donors' generosity will benefit thousands of people in need. We are extremely grateful for their support," added McPherson
"I was honored to be recognized by Spurwink as the Humanitarian of the Year," said Ryan. "But the real winners are the over 4,500 people served by Spurwink," he added.
The event was attended by Mr. Ryan's family, friends, business associates and dignitaries, including Governor John Baldacci, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Congressman Tom Allen, former Governor John McKernan and sports legends Rico Petrocelli, Ray Bourque and Joan Benoit-Samuelson.
Mr. Ryan is Chairman and CEO of TD Banknorth Inc., a leading banking and financial services company headquartered in Portland with banking divisions in eight Northeastern states and a majority-owned subsidiary of TD Bank Financial Group of Canada . TD Banknorth Inc. is one of the 25 largest commercial banking organizations in the United States . Mr. Ryan serves as a Director and Vice Chairman of TD Bank Financial Group, as well as the Group Head of U.S. Personal and Commercial Banking.
In his community life, Ryan serves on the Board of Directors of WellPoint, Inc., and UnumProvident Corporation, and as a Trustee of Colby College and the Libra Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Advisors at the University of New England , and participates in various other civic and professional activities.
